Sony rocks out the HD radio

Sony’s PR blitz continues with the announcement of two HD Radio products, a tuner and a radio-iPod dock combo. The XDR-F1HD Tuner and the XDR-S10HDiP HD Radio can both tune in the estimated 1,500 digital stations nationwide. The XDR-F1HD is an add-on tuner with LCD display and a wireless remote, set to launch in March for $100. The XDR-S10HDiP docking station sports an iPod interface and iTunes Tagging, the ability to tag songs while listening for later purchase using the iTunes Music Store. It will be available in the summer for $180.

PlatformArchitecture - Facebook

Posted by admin under media, resource, technology - No Comments

The Beginnings of Facebook Platform

Facebook has always recognized that using social context is an essential part of providing a great experience for users. That’s why we first released the Facebook Platform API in August 2006, which enabled developers to incorporate the data users chose to share into external websites and desktop applications in order to give users a more social experience wherever they were. The latest version of Facebook Platform also opened up the Facebook website itself, giving developers even stronger distribution models and access to all the integration points Facebook uses to build applications.

Facebook Platform unlocks significant value for both developers and users: it gives developers access to the core of Facebook’s value – the social graph – and gives users a better social experience on all Facebook applications, whether they’re inside or outside the Facebook website. A primary goal of Facebook has always been to make it easy for users to share information, and Facebook Platform opened up that information to benefit users and developers everywhere.

Developers’ Reception of Facebook Platform

Developers and users alike have embraced Facebook applications. 100,000 Facebook developers are currently building on Facebook Platform, and over 85% of Facebook users have used Facebook applications. Facebook Platform is open to all developers and companies, no matter what their size, goals or technical expertise. Our platform has been proven successful across audiences over the past 16 months, and we want to share the benefits of our work.

Opening up Facebook Platform Architecture

In the next step of opening up Facebook Platform, Facebook is now making its platform architecture available as a model for other social sites. Facebook will even license the Facebook Platform methods and tags for use by other platforms, which means that the 100,000 developers currently building Facebook applications can make their applications available on other social sites with no extra work.

Of course, Facebook Platform will continue to evolve. And by enabling our industry partners to use what we’ve learned, everyone benefits — users have a better social experience no matter where they are on the web, developers can make their applications available to new audiences, and social sites can offer more applications for their platform.

To clarify how you can use Facebook Platform as a model, we’re including some example FBML tag implementations, and also offer our test consoles and full documentation. Take a look at the High Level FBML Specification.

If you’d like to license the Facebook Platform methods or tags for your social site, please contact the Facebook Platform team at platform@facebook.com.

Limited Edition Zune

Posted by admin under news, technology - No Comments

zune

Microsoft is doing everything it can to penetrate into Apple’s iPod dominance of the MP3 player market. It’s latest campaign is a promotional partnership with Seattle’s GOODS, a boutique clothing brand that’s popular with the hip hop crowd.

Together they’ve designed a special gold argyle pattern that has been screen printed onto only ten Zunes. No pricing available as of yet, but if you want to get your hands on one, you better wake up early and get your booty to GOODS this Saturday.

Nokia envisions fingerprint-reading cellphone displays

Posted by admin under technology - No Comments

nokia-patent

Cellphones with built-in fingerprint scanners aren’t exactly revolutionary, but a recent patent application filed by Nokia could foreshadow mobile displays that recognize and react to biometric inputs. More specifically, the technology would see a touch-sensitive user interface that could allow / deny access or morph depending on what user swiped their finger. Moreover, a mysterious “visual display cursor” is also referenced, which would seemingly allow the device to bring important applications / lists / etc. to the screen’s forefront depending on the preferences saved for each fingerprint. As always, it’s a mystery as to when something like this will actually go mainstream, but we certainly dig the sound of it — even when written in totally incomprehensible patent app lingo.

The 20GB+ Eee PC mod

Posted by admin under technology - No Comments

eee-pc-usb-flash-blutooth-hack

8GB of flash storage is currently the best you can hope for in a standard (though imported) Eee PC. However, if you’re industrious and determined enough, you can marry your 4GB Eee with a $150 (or so) 16GB Corsair Flash Voyager drive for a full 20GB of storage. That’s exactly what Johnx did over at eeeuser.com. He even integrated Bluetooth like we’ve seen before. Best of all though, the new NAND and Bluetooth radio are not soldered to the system. Rather, they are fitted to a pair of newly installed, internal USB ports slung off the miniPCIe connector. Thus, the system can be upgraded at any time. All hail Johnx… king of the Eees!

IBM sues Shentech for selling volatile counterfeit batteries

Posted by admin under media, news, technology - No Comments

It’s not like ThinkPads have been immune to the notorious overheating battery issue, but a fiery incident in Ohio may not be IBM’s fault. In a somewhat bizarre tale, it’s reported that an Ohioan purchased a replacement battery from Shentech for his ThinkPad, only to later have it overheat, catch on fire and damage his machine. After discovering that the faulty cell was actually a counterfeit, IBM took the liberty of ordering a dozen batteries from the Flushing, New York-based company, and it soon discovered that all twelve received were indeed fakes. As you can probably guess, IBM has filed suit against the outfit and has asked the court to require Shentech to hand over all of its batteries for destruction, profits it made from selling the fakes and a million dollars “per counterfeit mark per type of item sold.” That’ll teach ‘em to mess with Big Blue.

Evergreen’s card-styled DAP: it’s business time

Posted by admin under news, technology - No Comments

bizcarddap

As far as we know, Evergreen’s Business Card MP3 Player doesn’t come pre-loaded with Flight of the Conchords’ most relevant jam, but you can’t deny it’d be a great fit. This all-white, ultra-simplistic DAP checks in at 86- x 55- x 6-millimeters, weighs just 36-grams and includes 1GB of storage space. You’ll also find a flip-out USB 2.0 connector, internal speaker and some sort of recording function. Slip one into your tight leather jacket pocket for a steep $126.19 — it should make sorting the recycling much less tedious.
