Search Engine Ranking Factors 2009

Posted by admin under internet, market, technology - No Comments

Every two years, SEOmoz surveys top SEO experts in the field worldwide on their opinions of the algorithmic elements that comprise search engine rankings. This year features contributors from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the Ukraine, the Dominican Republic and many more.

Each participant was asked to rate more than 100 search ranking factors along with specific questions about hot issues in the SEO field. This document, representing the collective wisdom of expert practitioners, is, in opinion, one of the most useful resources for SEO practitioners of all varieties, helping to provide transparency into what matters (and doesn’t) for best practices in search engine optimization.

How to Market Your Blog in Six Steps

Posted by admin under internet, market - No Comments

Service business owners across the U.S. are using blogs to promote their business, serve more people, attract more prospects, and retain clients. It’s one thing to start a blog and quite another to market it. Follow these six steps if you want to increase traffic.

1) The first rule to remember is to always write quality content to your target market. Sub-par postings will turn away possible clients.

2) Let your readers subscribe to your newsletter or blog updates. Input a simple .php form in a prominent location and offer an incentive to join. Some advanced wordpress templates already have this feature imbedded in the code. Check out smashingmagazine.com for 100 great themes, some of which have this feature.

3) Now for the most time consuming task. Submit new feeds to the following sites.

  • blogsearch
  • blogarama
  • blogbunch
  • blogcatalog
  • blogcode
  • blogexplosion
  • blogflux
  • bloghop
  • bloglisting
  • blogrankings
  • blogtoplist
  • getblogs
  • globeofblogs
  • lsblogs
  • myblog2u
  • quickblogdirectory
  • sportsblogs
  • weblogalot, and
  • dmoz.

These sites will ask you to log in and create an account. That is why it takes so long to submit it to each of them.

4) Use Social Bookmarks. So many to choose from, so little time… Digg, del.icio.us, Propeller, and Technorati are the top sites along with Google, Yahoo, and MSN’s bookmark sites. You should also add some bookmark capabilities to your blog. I use ShareThis for mine.

5) Once you have your blog feed listed with the major submission sites, it is time to spread the word. Take massive action and post quality comments to as many of the top blogs as possible. Make sure you’re not spamming - just give good advice and leave good questions - and leave a trail of your blog everywhere you can.

6) Give your visitors a way to share your posts with their friends and family. The final instruction is to stay consistent and be patient.

If you have good content and a visually pleasing site, it will attract the right visitors and your blog will grow - right along with the rest of your business. It will likely take at least thirty days (probably more like sixty to ninety) before that happens. Be patient and keep moving forward.

Do We Really Need to Optimize Our Sites for Mobile Phones?

Posted by admin under internet, living, market - No Comments

If you have a website or blog, you probably already heard about the importance of optimizing it for mobile phones, creating a specific version for the iPhone and so on.

I won’t challenge the fact that mobile devices are more popular than ever, and that as we go forward more and more people will be using them to get online.

What I am not sure is if webmasters really need to worry about that trend when creating and managing their websites.

One possible scenario: within five years or so, when the number of users accessing your website via a mobile device will be big enough to matter, those devices will no longer need a special version of your website anyway.

If you think about it, the iPhone and similar smart phones are closing the gap from mobile phones to computers. You can already visit most websites with those devices without needing to load a special version of the site. The software is definitely there, and the hardware is arriving.

Maybe within five years most mobile devices will be able to load websites just like your desktop computer does today. If that is the case, webmasters will be able to keep focusing on building usable and accessible websites, and that is it. There will be no need to create special mobile versions because mobile devices will behave just like any other computer.

ProFlowers.com Comes Up Smellin’ Like Roses

Posted by admin under internet, market, news - 1 Comment

The days leading up to Valentine’s Day are some of the busiest for online floral retailers (only Mother’s Day is busier). Big money is required to remain competitive in this market. Both 1800-Flowers.com and ProFlowers.com appeared on the homepage of Yahoo! the week prior to Valentine’s Day and Teleflora.com aired a TV spot during the Super Bowl. In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, each of the top four online floral retailers (1800-Flowers.com, FTD.com, ProFlowers.com, and Teleflora.com) saw a major increase in traffic. ProFlowers.com claimed the biggest spike in weekly visitors, increasing 423% in the first two weeks of February.

When looking at Share of Voice (the percent of visits within the competitive set) over the first two weeks of February, FTD.com and ProFlowers.com stand tall with 40% and 30% of visits, respectively. However, when also considering the Share of Wallet (the percent of purchases made within the competitive set) over the same timeframe, ProFlowers.com clearly separates itself. They accounted for 54% of all the purchases made at one of these four retailers.

In fact, ProFlowers.com led the field in two key metrics: bounce rate and conversion rate. The lowest bounce rate (percentage of visits that result in the visitor immediately leaving the site) and the highest conversion rate both belonged to ProFlowers.com by a comfortable margin. It appears that ProFlowers.com was much more effective at driving quality traffic to their site, as their shoppers were engaged and more likely to make a purchase.

Today’s economic climate is certainly not news to anyone. As consumers tightened their sweetheart budgets, the leading online florists pulled out all stops to gain market share (one going so far as advertising during the Super Bowl). In 2009, ProFlowers.com clearly outperformed its top rivals by having more online transactions than their top three competitors combined. For rival florists, understanding what tactics have helped ProFlowers.com succeed online will be critical to their efforts to regain lost market share as they gear up for another battle come Mother’s Day. Landrush for .tel domain begins tomorrow

Posted by admin under internet, living, market, resource, technology - No Comments

Companies that missed the opportunity to register their trademarks with the new .tel top-level domain (TLD) will get another opportunity with the opening of the landrush period from 3 February.

The sunrise period of registrations reserved for trademark owners ran from 3 December to 2 February. The .tel TLD will be open to all from tomorrow until 23 March.

However, domain registry Telnic will be charging a premium price during the landrush period to discourage domain name speculators and cyber-squatters, according to the firm’s chief executive, Khashayar Mahdavi.

The .tel domain differs from regular TLDs such as .com and .uk because, rather than store IP addresses for web servers, it links directly to content and information stored on the domain name server. A .tel address therefore offers companies a single page to publish all contact and communications details, which can be kept updated in real time, explained Mahdavi.

“It is a tool for companies, public and governmental agencies and individuals, and a lot of people are now realising how powerful this is,” he said. “We are the convergence point for telecoms, the internet and directory services.”

The new TLD could be a big success, depending on how well organisations want to market their .tel domains, according to Thomas Herbert, product manager at hosting firm Hostway.

“For businesses it is an important one, and I think it will take off and be adopted far quicker than, say, .mobi,” Herbert said. “So firms must remember that it is better paying the $400 [£280] now than arguing in a [dispute resolution case] later.”

The domains will be offered on a first-come first-served basis to guarantee the fairest method of distribution, said Mahdavi.
